Kristen Ashley- The Hookup | Review

the hookup

Title: The Hookup (Moonlight and Motor Oil #1)
Author: Kristen Ashley
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: December 19, 2017

When the new girl in town, Eliza “Izzy” Forrester decides to hit the local drinking hole, she’s not ready to meet the town’s good, solid guy. She’s definitely not prepared to engage in her very first hookup with him.

Then Izzy wakes up the next morning in Johnny Gamble’s bed and good girl Izzy finds she likes being bad for Johnny.

Even so, Izzy feels Johnny holding her at arm’s length. But Johnny makes it clear he wants more and Izzy already knows she wants as much of hot-in-bed, sweet-out-of-it Johnny Gamble.

Floating on air thinking this is going somewhere, Izzy quickly learns why Johnny holds distant.

He’s in love with someone else. Someone who left him and did it leaving him broken. Whoever was up next would be runner up, second best. Knowing the stakes, Izzy will take what she can get from the gentleman that’s Johnny Gamble. And even knowing his heart might never mend, Johnny can’t seem to stay away from Izzy.

Until out of nowhere, his lost love comes back to town. He’s not going back, but Johnny still knows the right thing to do is let Izzy go.

And Izzy knew the stakes, so she makes it easy and slips through his fingers.

But that’s before Johnny realizes Eliza moved to town to escape danger that’s been swirling around her.

And that’s why Johnny decides to wade in.

That and the fact Eliza Forrester makes breakfast with a canary singing on her shoulder and fills out tight dresses in a way Johnny Gamble cannot get out of his head.

I’ll be honest here… It will be a cold day in hell the day I hate a Kristen Ashley book. That’s the truth and because of that I feel like this review will seem kinda biased and unfair…but what the hell right? I’m still going to write it because this book was good. Real good. Kristen Ashley never disappoints. I have read every single book series she has ever written… well.. except for Ghost and Reincarnation… I saw the word Ghost and I literally went “No thank you. I’m not be touching that even with a 10 foot pole” lol. I’m a scaredy cat, you see.

Now, The Hookup, wow…. talk about starting with a bang. You know what I recognized about KA’s books? The male protagonist in her books have this air of unapologetic, confident vibe to them that is so honest yet not rude. They have this no nonsense attitude to them that whenever they open their mouth to say even the simplest thing- I can’t help but smile so wide and feel my inner fan girl squeal with joy. You know what else I love? KA’s ability to write male characters that support  their female protagonist to be confident with their own quirkiness. Like they say “own it, babe”. *sigh*

I liked Eliza and Johnny… Eliza is innocent but not in a naive way- more in the- She is not a risk-taker, she’s a creature of habit. Her quirkiness is her need for schedule..that is her nirvana. If there is something to be said about Lizzie, it is that she is responsible, careful and guarded. Johnny. Johnny Gamble is THE MAN. He is dependable, understanding… He is basically what we ALL want in a badass alpha macho man hahaha.

KA’s stories are mostly based on the age old ‘love at first sight.. ok fine.. attraction at first sight’. It’s the most cliche start to a story, right? But KA does what she does best and writes a damn good book. If you haven’t noticed from my rambling..I love Kristen Ashley’s books..her books give me life. She has woven her magic yet again with The Hookup. Was it one of my favourite KA book? No…I’m being honest here. Its not THE BEST KA book out there but it’s still bloody good. And if we are on the path of honestly… I’ll admit one more thing.. I don’t how..I don’t care.. I really don’t know how but MY GOD does Kristen Ashley write the best ‘under the sheets’ scenes.

    1. Oh wow…that’s going to be tough lol.. I started with the rock chick series first but that’s got over 8 books..all which I love ❤️ but if you want something that doesn’t take as much time you can start with the dream man series. The beauty of KA’s books is that the characters are all ‘connected’ as in… There’s always someone who makes a cameo from another series which is so much fun ( if you’re a fan since you, as readers, love those characters too). Her fantasy land and the three series is more on the fantasy/paranormal genre- both of these series are good👌
